CSIP Older people's mental health programme:

Wyn Abbot

I have been involved with the Let’s Respect project from the start and the ideas from the project group have gone through numerous transformations. The philosophy of the project team has been to develop something that is innovative and effective; the final result is the consolidation of the knowledge, ideas and vision of a group of committed, motivated and skilled people from across the UK.

The tool we have developed is flexible enough to be used as part of formal and informal training and has been designed for maximum impact recognising people first rather than a label.  The photographs used in the toolkit were chosen to complement the written work and to make a statement in themselves.

The group wanted to ensure that people with dementia, delirium and depression are not seen purely at face value but to recognise them as unique individuals with a history, a present and a future.  It is not only essential to have an understanding of how to recognise dementia, depression and delirium but it is essential to find out how this affects the individual being cared for in order to meet their needs effectively.
