My job is a never-ending source of fascination to me. Although there are only a small number of mental illnesses commonly encountered in older people there are endless variations in how these come to our attention, how older people and their families cope with them and how they respond to care and treatment.

Like older people, the ‘Let’s Respect’ toolkit is something a little bit different. It’s a unique concept, incorporating a box filled with information presented in a variety of formats from small case studies in booklet form, to guide books and bookmarks. There is also an accompanying PowerPoint presentation and Nursing Standard recently published a companion guide.

I hope that colleagues working in acute hospitals will use the toolkit in many different ways, from coffee-time chat to formal teaching sessions. Our thanks go to Nadine Schofield for being a tireless and inspirational leader to the project.
